Supporting parents to support their children

HOME
Welcome to our Parent Zone. The Parent Zone is one of the four pillars of Excell3s strategy to raising academic achievements and social aspirations of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. We have also included a useful directory of services targeting our strategic partners and parents in Brent and national organisations.

Parenting of Teenage Boys Empowerment Programme
Parental involvement in the schooling of their children is key to improving their overall achievement levels. Excell3 will work with others to provide a range of services accessible to all parents and carers of teenage boys in Brent. We also want to increase the amount of parent to parent support activity by training parents and carers as facilitators of parent and carers groups.
This programme has been designed to assist parents to support their sons in the education of their boys. Statistics show that the level of underachievement within this group has become an issue of concern. Presently in Brent there is an under representation of parents and carers who are actively involved in their child’s education. Most secondary schools in the borough are experiencing severe difficulties and challenges in engaging parents.
This initiative will seek to engage parents of teenage boys mainly through group interventions, working closely with secondary schools, existing service providers and the community.
we know that as boys make the transition from boyhood to manhood they often present challenges for parents and their educational performance can also be adversely affected.
Research has proven that parents are one of the key factors in the educational success of their children.
This service has been designed in consultation, with parents, carers and teachers in Brent.to assist parents to effectively support their teenage sons in education.

Community Mediation Director

The Centre for Peaceful Solutions is a registered charity based in Brent, which has been awarded funding to establish Brent Mediation Service. This is a partnership project with the London Borough of Brent, part of Brent Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership’s ongoing strategy.

Mediation is a process in which two parties in dispute invite an independent third party to facilitate a peaceful resolution. A mediator establishes a context in which those in conflict feel able to contribute to a shared solution: mediators do not solve other people’s problems for them.

Over the three years of the project will be: Recruiting, training and supporting a team of Brent residents as mediators; Engaging with Brent’s statutory, private, voluntary and community groups to establish mediation as the most effective first resort in any conflict situation; Developing sustainable mediation services in Brent schools, training and supporting young people to resolve their own conflicts peacefully; Recruiting, training and supporting a dedicated team of specialist mediators, who will conduct ‘high-level’ mediations which involve the threat or consequences of violent crime. Please contact us if you are interested in: Training as a mediator; An introductory workshop at your office, school or community group Establishing a mediation referral process in your area or place of work; Taking part in a mediation for a conflict in which you are currently involved; Finding out more about mediation and peaceful conflict resolution.
